Energy Star Light Fixtures- How Do they earn this rating?

What makes a fixture earn the Energy Star Approval? Will I really save money if I replace my old light fixtures?  Well let's answer the question about saving money, if you replaced 5 of your most frequently used light fixtures you would save approximately $65 a year in energy cost.    Not only would you save money but you would emit less greenhouse gas. If every home in America replaced 5 of their light fixtures with energy star light fixtures, collectively we could prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to 10 million cars.   

Now let's discuss what makes a fixture qualify as an Energy Star.  the main difference between standard fixtures and Energy lighting fixtures are that they use a quarter of the energy. They also distribute light more efficiently and evenly.  They also carry a two year warranty which is double the industry standard. Energy efficient light fixtures use bulbs that last at least 10,000 hours which is about 7 years of regular use.  The good news is that Energy Star light fixtures come in a variety of styles.
